Possible indicators:
What are the signs ?
Some physical signs :
- bruises, bleeding, etc, in the genital area;
- bruises to breast, buttocks, lower abdomen or thighs;
- sexually transmitted diseases;
- vaginal infection, abdominal pain, recurrent headaches;
Some behavioural symptoms:
- fear of being hurt during dressing;
- fear of being alone with a particular adult (e.g. access visits);
- inappropriate sexual activity (excessive masturbation, rubbing genitals against adults);
- sexual themes/fears in artwork, stories or play;
- hurting others or themselves (including suicide attempts anorexia)
- showing knowledge of sexual behaviour beyond their years, sexual language;
- regressive behaviour (e.g. sudden return to wetting or soiling);
- delinquent, aggressive, or truant behaviour at school;
- poor relationships with other children;
- avoiding physical activity at school;
- strong fear/anxiety (especially about going home).
Keeping children safe – some preventative measures
There are simple ways or skills parents and cares can talk to their children about regarding keeping safe.’Protective Behaviours’ give children some simple skills for copying with any difficult or dangerous situation. In particular, the focus on teaching children to recognise when situation is unsafe and to speak to an adult if they need assistance.
